The Hottest Mobile Internet Market Segments in China in H1 2017

In the first half of 2017, investments and policy changes triggered fiercer competition in bike sharing industry. With the rapid increase of enterprises and bikes, bike sharing industry saw its monthly usage frequency double that of online car hailing service after an explosive growth at the beginning of the year. However, the growth of monthly usage frequency of bike sharing services began to slow down since March. In June, a diversion of traffic in bike sharing industry appeared because Alipay, DIDI, WeChat and other way to use bikes increased and it was turning hot outside.

 

Thanks to mobile internet, information acquiring services became more affordable and accessible and consumer behaviors were more frequent and diversified. In 2017, comprehensive information apps were started up on over 620 million unique devices in June whose growth rate once hit 15.1% in the first half of the year. On the other hand, with the development of information media and changing of distribution, mass vertical information was able to cover more users and satisfy various demands for information. Moreover, in the first half of 2017, the growth rates of the monthly unique devices of sport apps and financial apps in vertical information sector hit 23.0% and 21.6% respectively, exceeding the average growth rate of comprehensive information apps. Therefore, vertical information apps had huge growth potential.

 

In June 2017, mobile short video apps have seen its monthly effective usage time hit 490 million hours, rising 15.5% from the beginning of the year and monthly usage frequency reached 2,590 million times, up 12.1% from the beginning of the year, which indicated that users were more loyal to the apps. Among the mobile short video apps, Kuaishou apps ranked the first by its monthly effective usage time of 430 million hours and its monthly usage frequency of 2,210 million times. Douyin app developed most rapidly in terms of the monthly effective usage time and the monthly usage frequency. In June, Douyin saw its monthly effective usage time and monthly usage frequency increase by 30.8% and 43.3% respectively from the preceding month. Overall, there was a huge potential to be explored in short video sector and users paid more attention to Kuaishou, Douyin and other phenomenal apps.

 

 

In June 2017, mobile audio apps were started up on unique mobile devices of 120 million units, up 33.6% from the beginning of the year. However, only 10.5% of mobile internet users used mobile audio apps. Moreover, the monthly usage frequency of mobile audio apps reached 1,960 million times, up 47.6% from the beginning of the year. Overall, audio app market had huge growth potential but low penetration rate. Acquiring contents through non-screen manner was the future trend. Among all audio apps, Iget app stood out in the first half of 2017 by the growth rates of 68.0% in its monthly unique devices and 91.5% in its monthly usage frequency.
